The main essential elements of the Russian New Year are: a Christmas tree, a rich festive table, giving and reciving gifts, Ded Moroz and Snegurochka, watching TV-programms, clock chimes and the President’s speech.
New Year’s Day is a national holiday in Russia, in which most businesses and public offices are closed.
Russian children believe in the Grandfather Frost who wears a long red fur coat, a hat and felt boots and carries gifts in a large sack on his back. Grandfather Frost often comes with his granddaughter, Snegurochka or the Snow Girl.
Every major city has New Year festivals, concerts, fairs and other celebratory events. Main squares are decorated with trees, lights and decorations, everywhere there are music and fireworks.

Christmas, on the other hand, is celebrated on January 7, not on the 25th of December. Russian Orthodox Church uses the ‘Julian’ calendar for religious celebration days, which is why the date is different.

It can be giving up smoking, losing some weight, returning borrowed money, acquiring a habit of getting up earlier, etc.

My favourite holiday is the New Year. I always celebrate it with my family. Before the holiday we often visit our friends and relatives and give them presents. We often go to the city centre to see the beautiful New Year tree on the main square.
We always celebrate New Year at home. A week before the holiday we begin to decorate our house with lights and garlands.
We also put up a New Year tree and decorate it with balls, cones, icicles and other toys, tinsel and lights. Under the tree we usually put statuettes of Father Frost and Snow Maiden. We put New Year presents there too.
On the 31 st of December we always cook salads. My mother usually roasts meat and boils potatoes. She always bakes our favourite Napoleon cake. We watch New Year programmes and films on TV.
At about ten o’clock we all sit down at the table and have a meal. Just before midnight we light sparklers and my father opens a bottle of champagne.
We watch the president’s speech on TV, and then while the clock is striking midnight, we make wishes and drink champagne. After that we go to the balcony to watch fireworks.
When we come back into the room we open our presents. I usually get a lot of presents for the New Year. And I always try to give presents to my parents, grandparents and friends.

New Year is always connected with our new hopes and dreams. Everyone hopes that next new year will be better than the last one. As usual people make New Year Resolutions, they promise to start doing morning exercises, to eat healthier food. Unfortunately people don’t always keep them.
The celebration of this holiday begins on New Year’s Eve, that is, on the 31st of December. At home people stay up until midnight and much later. They light coloured lamps on New Year Tree and have late dinner with champagne. Sometimes they just watch TV or go out for late walk. Everybody gets presents.
In Scotland New Year’s Eve is called Hogmanay. Also the Scottish have the custom of First-Footing.
Most differences in celebrating New Year are connected with a meal or special food. For example, in Switzerland special bread, rich in butter, eggs and raisin is baked and a roasted goose is cooked. In Spain there is a custom to eat 12 grapes at midnight. In Greece some people play cards believing that they will be lucky the whole year if they win. In Russia the traditional dish for the holiday is “Russian salad”(оливье).

New Year is a cheerful and wonderful holiday. Our days are filled with happiness and beautiful magic. We are listening to and singing Christmas songs, wishing all the happy New Year, and giving presents to each other. It seems that we are children again waiting for the magic.

According to our country’s New Year traditions, we buy and decorate fur-tree with toys, sweets, electric candles, and a big star on the top of the tree. We also put a figurine of Grandfather Frost under a fur-tree, so he can bring gifts to our house. We work to decorate our house for New Year to bring the holiday spirit: we stick snowflakes on windows, hang a beautiful wreath at the front door, and hang garlands of gleaming tinsel on other doors and walls as well.
Preparing for New Year’s party (Подготовка к празднованию Нового Года)
Most people prefer to prepare for the holiday party in advance. We cook herring under a fur coat, salad Olivier and jellied just the day before the New Year. As for the main dish, we prefer to bake something in the oven: chicken, beef, pork or even a rabbit. The table is served in a festive way. There are a lot of fresh fruits, vegetables, greens, mushrooms and pickled cucumbers. And of course beverages: champagne, juices, mineral water and strong drinks for those who like them.
New Year’s coming (Новый год наступает)
Normally, we get together for the holiday table about 10 pm to say goodbye to the Old Year. It is believed that the New Year is a family holiday, so we always try to join with relatives and friends. About midnight we turn on the TV and listen to the President’s speech. We listen to him holding a glass of champagne in our hands. He usually talks for about 10 minutes, congratulates everyone on the New Year and wishes all the best. When Kremlin Chimes, the main clock of our country, start to beat, we make a toast and drink the champagne, congratulate each other, and make a wish.
